Financial literacy reinforced positive behavior towards resource management to destructive learners!!!!

Located in a small peninsula village called Nango in Mayuge district is Nango primary school  with a population of about 2560 learners. The natives mainly depend on fishing as the main economic activity due location on the shores of Lake Victoria. Consequent of poor fishing methods, the government put up strict restrictions on fishing at the lake resulting into reduction of household incomes and low livelihoods. This also, has in turn affected the education of the children.

When I first arrived at Nango primary school for the Teach For Uganda fellowship, I was met with chaos. My learners were unruly, go tearing up their books and throwing papers all over the classroom. It was disheartening to see such a lack of respect for their own property and resources. Little did I know that financial literacy using the Aflatoun, a curriculum program that specialized in teaching financial literacy to young children through captivating stories would be the answer. Intrigued, I started to teach my learners. The results were beyond my wildest expectations.

As I went through the Aflatoun stories with my learners, their eyes lit up with enthusiasm. They were enthralled by the tales of adventurous characters who faced challenges and made wise decisions. These stories not only entertained but also taught important resource management skills.

From then forward, I witnessed a remarkable change in my learners. Gradually, they began to take these lessons to heart and apply them to their daily lives. The once chaotic classroom became a symbol of order and responsibility. The leaners started handling their books and pencils with care, understanding their value and importance. Even more impressively, they began to manage their little pocket money, ensuring they made wise choices.

The impact of Aflatoun's financial literacy program on these young minds is incredible. The transformations still amaze me. They are now equipped with the tools and knowledge to make informed decisions about their resources not only in class but also at home. A lifelong lesson.

I am overwhelmed with gratitude towards Aflatoun for this incredible innovation. The program has not only made a positive impact on the lives of these children but also on the future generation. Together, we are shaping a future where our children are empowered to make wise choices and build a better world.

As a witness to this transformation, I am filled with hope and pride. Seeing the enthusiasm and growth in my learners brings me immense joy. I am confident that with the continued implementation of financial literacy programs, we will nurture a generation of responsible and empowered individuals who will change the world for the better.
